Emma Watts was extraordinarily proud of her family’s long history in eastern Kentucky. In 1780, her great-grandfather, William Walker, came from Buckingham County, Virginia, to make his home in what became Madison County. Firmly establishing Elmwood as his homestead, William W. Watts, placed his initials over the front entrance. “William and Mary Watts” and “A.D. 1887” are carved into the sandstone steps, and Miss Emma’s name is burned into wood. Everywhere in the home, portraits and photographs, furniture and memorabilia kept the past vividly alive.
